A smoothie made with strawberries and blueberries but also spinach, oatmeal, yogurt, and chia seeds. A sweet and refreshing smoothie that is low in fat and calories, high in fiber, and loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

The Lean Green Bean, is my Secret Recipe Club blog this month. Lindsay has lots of great posts on staying fit and eating healthy. She also has lots of fun smoothie posts. In her My First Green Monster post she says, “Today I drank spinach. And I liked it.”

Her post The Evolution of a Smoothie talks about her love for smoothies and how she’s progressed from a smoothie made with just fruit, fruit juice and ice to a smoothie with fruit but also spinach, oatmeal, Greek yogurt, and chia seeds. Did you know that Chia seeds are gluten-free; have more protein than rice, wheat or oats; provide more heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids than any other plant food; and are high in fiber with 2 grams of fiber in each tablespoon. A fabulous addition to any smoothie.

I recently splurged on a Blendtec blender and I’ve been whipping up some great, healthy green smoothies lately too. I like Lindsay’s idea to up the nutrition with the addition of chia seeds. So in one shake I can get 2 servings of fruit, 1 vegetable serving, protein from the yogurt, fiber from the oatmeal and all the great benefits of chia seeds.

I keep a big container of  Chobani non fat plain yogurt in the fridge and lots of frozen fruit in the freezer, and my teenagers boys often whip themselves up a smoothie for breakfast or lunch too.

If you haven’t tried a green smoothie yet, you should give it a try. You can’t really taste the spinach and if you add blueberries it’s a great purple color, which I think helps you get use to the idea of drinking spinach.

I used to skip vreakfast until I got a mean blender, now it’s smoothie city as many mornings I have the time to make them. I love yours because it contains oatmeal and chia seeds – not to mention, I have a ton of greek yogurt I’ve been trying to use up. By the way.. Who knew ch-ch-ch chia pets would be so good for us, one day? lol

We make a similar smoothie almost everyday. I have not thought to put oatmeal in it though. I will have to try it out!

Isn’t it fun “hiding” veggies in smoothies! One of my favorite adds to smoothies is zucchini.

I’ve never thought to put oatmeal in a smoothie. It’s a great idea though as I’m sure it makes it so much more filling!

It almost looks like a chocolate smoothie!! I’m sure it’s just as delicious as a chocolate one would be. 🙂 Great pick for SRC.

I made a similar smoothie for my parents and snuck spinach in there. So sneaky but so good for you.
