Sweet sliced bananas bathed in heavy cream and dressed up with brown sugar and toasted hazelnuts.
When I wrote my Oregon RV Trip post a couple weeks ago, I mentioned a little restaurant in Newport, Oregon where we ate breakfast one morning, La Maison. Before they bring you your breakfast order, they serve you a custard cup filled with bananas and cream topped with brown sugar and chopped hazelnuts. My husband and I loved it so much we decided we needed to recreate it at home.
We tried to think of a name that would describe how delicious this dessert is, but bananas in cream with brown sugar and hazelnuts just didn’t seem to do it justice. My husband said how about Bananas La Maison (the name of the restaurant) and that sounded perfect. There’s probably a name for it, maybe French or something, and I’ve just never heard of it before. If it does have another name, please let me know.
It’s such a simple, elegant dish. A wonderful light dessert that could be served after almost any meal. I hope you’ll give it a try.
Bananas La Maison
Ingredients
- 2 bananas sliced
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 4 teaspoons brown sugar
- 4 tablespoons chopped hazelnuts toasted
Instructions
- Divide the sliced bananas between four serving dishes. Pour two tablespoons cream over the bananas in each dish. Sprinkle with brown sugar and hazelnuts. Served immediately.

Hi Lauren – it really is a simple but memorable treat. It’s become one of my favorite easy desserts. So glad you found my site.

Hi Barbara! I love this combination and fell in love with it in Newport when my husband I visited La Maison for breakfast earlier this year, I have made it several times but couldn’t get the hazelnuts quite right. I wanted to have this recipe on my pinterest so I searched Google and found your story! I will use roasted hazelnuts thanks to you! We are going to Newport again for Thanksgiving and looking forward to “Bananas La Masion” and their yummy Maple doughnuts!

Thanks Stacey – I’m glad that you found my site! I didn’t get a chance to try their maple doughnuts. Guess I have to plan a second trip. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. What a fun place to spend it.

I’ve eaten at that little restaurant! I think I’m going to make this for dessert sometime on the weekend.
My husband’s aunt used to make banana shortcake and it was one of my favorite things growing up. The secret is a little butter melted on the warm shortcake. Amazing!
Barbara Schieving
How fun that you’ve eaten there too. Now you’ve got me dreaming about banana shortcakes!

cream+Brown sugar+ toasted hazlenuts? WOW! It could not be any more appealing to the stomach and eye. This looks fantastic:) A different and lighter spin on heavier banana centered recipes like bananas foster. I love it

What a lovely dessert, I bet it would be delicious with a drizzle of maple syrup too instead of the sugar!

You mean the bananas and cream came after you placed the order, an amuse bouche, only for breakfast? Wow~! impressive.

Letty – Yes, an amuse bouche for breakfast. I had to Google it to see what that was 🙂
