Google Reader is Going Away

There are only a few more days before Google Reader is going away. If you subscribe to Barbara Bakes using Google Reader as your RSS reader, I don’t want to lose you as a subscriber. Please go to Feedly and migrate your Google Reader before July 1st. It’s a great alternative – you can easily import all your Google feeds. The above picture is only one of the fun layouts you can choose from on Feedly.

Or, as an alternative to using a reader, you can Subscribe to Barbara Bakes by Email and never miss out on a new recipe!

I tried a half-dozen alternatives and like Feedly the best. Also disappointing is Google doing away with iGoogle, the customizable version of their search I used as my home page.

Not really. I have several portals bookmarked, but I had some great modules on my iGoogle page that the others don’t offer. I use Excite f/ TV listings, Yahoo f/ my news headlines and like to hit Bing because of their lovely photo page that changes every day and has interactive features. (plus gives you points when you visit and more when you click on the links. I was thinking about creating my own start page w/ my local weather, a news feed, etc. If I find something similar to iGoogle, I’ll let you know.

I meant to list what I’ve tried, but I’ve already forgotten most of them. I really didn’t want to have to use a paid service. I synched my feeds with my Thunderbird email program, many email services allow for that, but I’m not particularly fond of it. Several yrs ago/several computers ago I used to use my Outlook Express for news feeds; this was before I really got into recipes and used it for news and discussion groups and the alt binary graphics groups, but my ISP stopped carrying the graphics groups (along with music and videos due to copyright concerns)

Also, I don’t know if the upcoming demise of Google Reader has anything to do with it, but my reader page has been S-L-O-W to load over the last few days. Nowhere else has been affected like that, so…. I’m going to start using my Feedly, go ahead and get better used to it….only have a week to go!
