Nearly every day on our recent trip to Australia I had crumpets with Nutella for breakfast. Since we got home I’ve avoided buying Nutella knowing how many calories it had. But when I saw Anne’s recipe for Banana Nutella Muffins, I decided I definitely needed to try it. And I’m so glad I did! (Be sure and visit Anne’s blog to see her gorgeous muffins.)
I decided to make three mini loafs instead of muffins. I also decided to use our favorite Cooking Light banana bread recipe, which has less fat and a lot less sugar than Anne’s recipe. Anne’s recipe called for brown sugar, so I substituted brown sugar for the granulated sugar. The brown sugar complemented the wonderful Nutella swirl.
Not only were these loaves delicious, they were so pretty I immediately starting thinking of people I should give a loaf. I’ll definitely be making this again. If you’re a Nutella lover you’ll definitely love this bread!
Ingredients
- 1 cup mashed very ripe banana (about 3 small)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup low-fat sour cream
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 t. baking powder
- 1/2 t. baking soda
- 1/4 t. salt
- 1/2 cup Nutella
Directions
- Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl; beat at medium speed of an electric mixer until well blended. Combine flour and next 3 ingredients; Add flour mixture to banana mixture, stirring just until moistened.
- Spoon 1/2 batter into an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 3-inch loaf pan coated with baking spray with flour. Add 1/4 cup Nutella in dollops. Swirl a bit then top again with remaining batter. Add another 1/4 cup Nutella in dollops on top. Swirl again.
- Bake at 350º for 1 hour and 5 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan on a wire rack; remove from pan, and cool completely on a wire rack. (Bake mini loaves for 35 minutes or muffins for 18 minutes.)
Dana2dor left me the Super Duper Chef award on her terrific blog. She lives in Romania and follows my blog. I’m always amazed at the power of the Internet to bring people together. Thanks for the great award! I am going to pass it on to two terrific blogs that I’ve just started following:

I love to bake, especially cookies, cakes, and pies. I’ll post my adventures in the kitchen, my favorite new recipes, as well as our family favorites.

I’m not huge on banana bread inless there are add in’s like chocolate chip or coconut but Nutella will work excellent!!! I’m definitly a Nutella lover and love the little loaves.
I love Nutella so much, too much! I can’t keep it in the house, either. But this is such a delicious combo. I can’t wait to try this one!
What a great idea – I am sure the nutella added great flavor to your bread. Congrats on your award.
Wow, Barbara, these looks awesome!
I would love to see the inside. You didn’t slice it yet? Was to warm…perhaps! Enjoy it dear!
Have a nice weekend!
Barbara, congratulations on your new award!
Also your bread looks great and I’m all for cutting back on calories or fat.
I’ll email you after this long weekend as I need some details about Australia. Hubby wants to go winter or spring of 2010.
Barbara, well done!
Oh, do I ever love bananas and Nutella. The combo reminds me of the crepes in Paris. I have to try this.
Oh wow, fantastic! Congrats on the award, you deserve it!
Congrats on your award, Barbara!! This banana nutella bread looks absolutely fabulous. Man oh man, nutella is one of my alltime favorite treats, even though I try my best to stay away from spooning it out of the jar too often
Barbara,
First, congrats on receiving the “You are a Super Duper Chef!” Second, thank you so much for passing it on to me. Wow! What a nice surprise! And last, I love banana bread. So, I will definitely have to try this version. It looks wonderful!
Thanks again Barbara!
I love nutella! I can eat it straight out of the jar, but I do love baking with it too. Once I made nutella cookies. This banana bread looks amazing.
Havent used Nutella before, but I am a big banana bread fan, will be posting one myself soon…
I love the thought of adding nutella to banana bread – how tasty!
Yummm… sounds delicious! What about the pics?! Oh, man! That’s mouth watering!
Love Nutella, I’m with you though, I avoid buying it because I would eat it on everything!
The bread looks delicious, thanks for a lower fat version.
This looks so good I can smell the bread baking, fantastic !!
Good ol Nutella – An Auzzie staple! I’m going to have to try this. Nutella here in the States is so expensive!
Barbara
The bread looks delicious. I am a BIG fan of Nutella but I am like you about the calories. I try and eat it in moderation. I will definitely be trying this recipe! Thanks for sharing and have a great holiday weekend.
This looks delicious Barbara and wow you’re so strong for resisting to buy Nutella!
Wow! I have an old jar of Nutella in the back of my pantry (my son decides he wants Nutella about once every year or two, buys the monster-sized jar then eats it for breakfast for a week…). I have been seeing so many recipes using Nutella all over the food blogs that I really must pull out that jar and bake with it. Your breads look fabulous! And I think it is so interesting that everyone makes banana bread yet it seems that no two recipes are alike!
LOVE all kinds of banana breads and I am alwyas ooking for different ones, this sounds perfect to me.
This looks amamzing. I’ve never had nutella before. I need to buy some so I can try it.
Absoluty delicious, I love banana and Nutella, I will made this recipe
A kiss for you
Something I have never baked with…nutella. Cookies would be tooo much I think but a bread?! Yes. A must try this one is!
Mmmm- great idea!! I had never had Nutella before my trip to Chicago. We stopped in a cupcake bakery and had Banana-Nutella cupcakes. Quite good! I'll have to buy a jar & mess around w/ it.
Barbara that looks so good! Bananas and Nutella sound like a winning combination to me! I will have to try that since I just LOVE banana bread!!!
This looks sooo good. I like that it’s less like “banana bread with nutella” and more like “nutella bread with chocolate.” LOL
I remember trying Nutella in Fiji 30 years ago it would be perfect in your bread. What a great idea.
Congrats on the award! This bread looks positively sinful!
Barbara… I’m flattered you chose my blog for your award – thanks so much! I have enjoyed exploring your site – it’s terrific! And yes – I finally figured out which “Jen” you were referring to in your comments. Aryn just left today and said to tell her hello!
I actually dip bananas in jars of Nutella, so this is right up my alley. As usual, you baked it to perfection, like you always do! Must try!
Wow, these look and sound yummy! I am looking forward to trying this. I’m sorry I’ve been absent, I left a post on my blog explaining everything.
I have some bananas that are almost ripe enough for baking – this is on my list now!
I clicked over here from Meet Me in the Kitchen. I love this idea! I just bought some Nutella and was thinking about what to do with it. I'd feel much better about adding it to some healthy banana bread rather than making brownies or truffles.
My dad would LOVE this! He’s on a quick bread kick – and I just bought a huge bunch of bananas – so this is going on the roster next!
I love bananas and I love Nutella, and heck, I love bread too! I’m going to make this!!!
Made this immediately after seeing the recipe for the first time. Delicious!! Banana and chocolate is my favorite combination. Thank you so much for sharing. This will be in my regulare baking rotation from now on!
It’s so nice of you to leave a comment and let me know how much you liked it! I should bake another batch soon! Thanks!
Oh lucky me that I found this recipe….I have bananas that are screaming to be used today and the swirl of nutella sealed the deal! Off to the kitchen to create.
This is hands down the best banana bread I have ever made! thanks so much for posting this recipe
So glad you loved it! Thanks for letting me know!
I made this and blogged about it–it is superb! I can always count on your blog for great recipes. Thanks.
Thanks Cindy for letting me know you loved the bread and blogged about it. You’re so kind!
This sounds amazing! Can you make it as a full size loaf or do you suppose it will fall apart?
Yes you can make a full size loaf. Just bake it for 1 hour and 5 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Good luck! This is a great one!
Success! I made it for my church small group tonight and it was delicious. Thanks for such a great recipe!
Thanks for letting me know! I’m so glad your church group enjoyed it. I really need to bake it again soon.
these turned out not very well…
Hi Alex – That’s too bad. This is one recipe that we make all the time and it turns out perfectly consistently. I’m happy to help you trouble shoot the problem if you’d like. Did you make changes?
How long do you cook the three mini loaves?
Cook the mini loaves about 35 minutes. Enjoy!
Looks delicious. Just what i –uh we need.
