Apple Pie Filling

Apple pie filling is a classic favorite, combining tender apples, warm spices, and sweetness for an irresistible flavor. It's versatile, perfect for pies, pancakes, pastries, or even on its own. With simple ingredients and nostalgic taste, it brings homemade goodness to any dessert.

Ingredients 

  • 4-5 large apples juicy apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala) about 2 pounds
  • 1 cup granulated sugar can be adjusted to taste, see notes
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup water

Instructions

  • Begin by peeling the apples to remove the skin, ensuring a smooth texture in your pie filling.
  • Core the apples to remove the seeds and hard center parts.
  • Slice the apples into ¼ inch thick slices or cut them into ¼ inch small cubes, according to your preference. Aim for uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.
  • In a medium-sized pan, combine the prepared apple slices or cubes, sugar, cinnamon, and water. Ensure that the apples are evenly coated with sugar and cinnamon.
  • Place the pan over medium heat. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer. Continue stirring occasionally. The apples should become tender, and the mixture will thicken as the sugar dissolves into a syrupy consistency.
  • Cook the mixture until the apples are completely tender, and the filling is thick and glossy, which should take about 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and allow the apple pie filling to cool down. As it cools, it will thicken further, making it ready to be used in your favorite pie crust or other dessert recipes. We use this recipe for apple hand pies.

Notes

  • The type of apples used can greatly affect the taste of your filling. Tart apples like Granny Smith are classic, but feel free to experiment with sweeter varieties or a mix of both for a balanced flavor.
  • Depending on the sweetness of your apples, you may need to adjust the sugar. Start with less and taste as you go; you can always add more if needed.
  • Consider adding a dash of nutmeg or allspice to give an extra layer of flavor to your apple pie filling. A tablespoon of lemon juice can also enhance the apple flavor and prevent browning.
  • The apple pie filling can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It can also be frozen for longer storage. Thaw in the refrigerator before using.
