    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • With just a few basic ingredients, apple pie filling is easy to make, making it accessible for bakers of all skill levels.
    • The natural sweetness of apples, enhanced by spices and a bit of sugar, makes for a delicious dessert that isn’t overly sweet.
    • Many of us have cherished memories of baking apple pies with our parents or grandparents, turning the process into a nostalgic experience.

    Recipe Ingredients

    • Apples: Large apples such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala
    • Sugar:Depending on the sweetness of your apples, you may need to adjust the sugar. Start with less and taste as you go; you can always add more if needed.
    • Cinnamon: Just a couple of teaspoons can create a comforting, homely fragrance, making it festive for the season.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Popular Substitutions and Variations

    • Swap the apples for pears or a softer, sweeter filling. You can also mix in peaches, berries, or rhubarb for a more diverse taste.
    • Add nutmeg or cloves for an additional layer of warmth.
    • For sweeteners, replacing granulated sugar with honey or maple syrup gives the filling a richer, deeper sweetness.

How to Make Apple Pie Filling

Step #1. Peel, core, and slice or cube the apples into uniform ¼-inch pieces.

Step #2. In a pan, combine the apples with sugar, cinnamon, and water, making sure everything is evenly coated. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it starts to gently boil.

Step #3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer until the apples are tender and the mixture thickens to a syrupy consistency, about 15-20 minutes.

Step #4. Remove from heat, let cool, and use in your favorite dessert recipe.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I freeze apple pie filling?

Yes, you can freeze it. Allow the filling to cool completely, then transfer it to a freezer-safe container or zip-lock bag. It can be frozen for up to 6 months.

How do I prevent my apple pie filling from being too watery?

Using a thickening agent like cornstarch, tapioca starch, or flour helps prevent a watery filling. Pre-cooking the apples also reduces excess liquid.

Can I use pre-packaged apple pie spice instead of cinnamon?

Absolutely! Adjust the quantity according to taste and the manufacturer’s guidelines.

    Expert Tips

    • While cinnamon is essential, adding nutmeg, cloves, ginger, or cardamom elevates the flavor.
    • A bit of lemon juice brightens the flavors and balances the sweetness. It also helps to prevent the apples from browning.
    • Uniformly thin slices ensure even cooking and a consistent texture.

How to Store Apple Pie Filling

If using within a week, refrigerate the cooled filling in an airtight container for 5-7 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, stirring to ensure even heating.

For longer storage, freeze the cooled filling in a freezer-safe container or heavy-duty zip-lock bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing.

What to Serve Apple Pie Filling With

A scoop of vanilla ice cream enhances the apple pie filling, creating a balanced contrast. Whipped cream adds a light, airy texture, while rich custard offers a smooth, creamy complement.

For a burst of flavor, stir the filling into your oatmeal. It’s also perfect for filling crêpes or serving alongside scones.

    Ingredients

    • 4-5 large apples juicy apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Gala) about 2 pounds
    • 1 cup granulated sugar can be adjusted to taste, see notes
    • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
    • ¼ cup water

    Instructions

    • Begin by peeling the apples to remove the skin, ensuring a smooth texture in your pie filling.
    • Core the apples to remove the seeds and hard center parts.
    • Slice the apples into ¼ inch thick slices or cut them into ¼ inch small cubes, according to your preference. Aim for uniform pieces to ensure even cooking.
    • In a medium-sized pan, combine the prepared apple slices or cubes, sugar, cinnamon, and water. Ensure that the apples are evenly coated with sugar and cinnamon.
    • Place the pan over medium heat. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
    • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer. Continue stirring occasionally. The apples should become tender, and the mixture will thicken as the sugar dissolves into a syrupy consistency.
    • Cook the mixture until the apples are completely tender, and the filling is thick and glossy, which should take about 15-20 minutes.
    • Remove the pan from the heat and allow the apple pie filling to cool down. As it cools, it will thicken further, making it ready to be used in your favorite pie crust or other dessert recipes. We use this recipe for apple hand pies.

    Notes

    • The type of apples used can greatly affect the taste of your filling. Tart apples like Granny Smith are classic, but feel free to experiment with sweeter varieties or a mix of both for a balanced flavor.
    • Depending on the sweetness of your apples, you may need to adjust the sugar. Start with less and taste as you go; you can always add more if needed.
    • Consider adding a dash of nutmeg or allspice to give an extra layer of flavor to your apple pie filling. A tablespoon of lemon juice can also enhance the apple flavor and prevent browning.
    • The apple pie filling can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It can also be frozen for longer storage. Thaw in the refrigerator before using.
    • Enjoy this delightful apple pie filling in your favorite pie recipe (here’s my favorite pie crust recipe), as a topping for ice cream, or even as a sweet addition to your morning pancakes or waffles!
