I’m in love with my new pressure cooker. I’d been wanting one for quite a while and when Frieda, Frieda Loves Bread, posted two great tutorials on using the Cuisinart 6 quart electric pressure cooker, and she told me they were selling at Costco for $69, I knew the time had come to buy one.

Frieda described the electric pressure cooker as a crockpot on steroids, which is a perfect description. You get the results of a tender, slow cooked meal without the long cooking time.

This pressure cooker is great for making Steel Cut Oats because they’re softer than when cooked on the stove. I like the slightly crunchy texture of Steel Cut Oats, but I usually ended up cooking them twice as long as the package directions suggested. Some people recommend soaking Steel Cut Oats overnight to soften them before cooking, but with a pressure cooker that isn’t necessary.

Another big advantage of making them in the pressure cooker is that they’re worry free. You can just press the start button and walk away, no having to worry about stirring them so they don’t burn on the bottom, or that they’ll boil over.

    Pressure Cooker Steel Cut Oats

    Cook Time10 minutes mins
    Additional Time30 minutes mins
    Total Time40 minutes mins
    Servings: 2 -3 servings
    Author: Barbara Schieving

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup Steel Cut Oats
    • 2 cups water
    • 1 tablespoon oil
    • Dash of salt

    Instructions

    • Combine ingredients in pressure cooker pot, select high pressure and set 10 minutes cook time. (It took the pressure cooker 10 minutes to come up to pressure and 20 minutes for a natural pressure release after the cook time, for a total prep time of 40 minutes. A quick release is not recommended with grains.)
    • Top with milk, fresh or dried fruit, chopped nuts or granola, and your favorite sweetener - brown or white sugar, maple syrup, or agave syrup. This time I chose dried blueberries, strawberries, granola and brown sugar.

Wow. Pressure cookers are sure better looking than they used to be! I adore steel cut oatmeal and have it frequently. Brilliant idea to make it this way……no fuss, no stirring!

I’ve never had steel cut oats, but have wanted to try them for quite awhile. I’ll have to check out the pressure cooker when I shop at Costco tomorrow;) I just wish I had more kitchen storage.

I love my pressure cooker–it’s not electric, it to old! It is the only way I cook pinto beans for refried beans. Pressure cookers are kind of a hidden gem in the cooking world.

Try using a substitute for the water such as a floral tea. It makes for a delicious oatmeal. Sometimes the night before i will do that and put it in the crockpot so its ready for the next morning if i am not going to have time to make it in a pressure cooker.

I have been looking at pressure cookers. I hope that I am not too late to get one at Costco. I love oatmeal and this would make cooking it so much easier.

That is something I have been wanting for awhile too. When I won $65 gift card to CSN I went back and forth and ended up getting (replacing) my rice cooker….which looks a lot like that pressure cooker. Funny thing I was going to make steel cut oats this morning for my husband and couldn’t fine the jar that I put them in. (ended up being right on the counter propping up my cooking notebook) 😀 Oops!

I love pressure cookers too although when I first tried one I was a bit worried about it exploding because of all the steam. It saves on so much time though-I love it! Great idea using it for oats mum! 😀 xxx

Oh you are going to love that pressure cooker! I’ve had one for a few years and it is the only way I can make some things (I’m at 6500 feet).

I absolutely can’t wait to see all the lovely things you make with it, and then make them for myself…muhaahhaaaa….

I love my electric pressure cooker. It’s amazing how quickly things can cook and how moist chicken can be when cooked in there. I’ve been meaning to try steel cut oats in it for months now, and in fact bought some on sale the other day. Thanks for sharing your recipe. I’m excited to try it.
