👩‍🍳 This grilled asparagus is ready in about 10 minutes, making it perfect for busy weeknight dinners or last-minute entertaining. The high heat of the grill creates beautiful char marks while keeping the interior tender and crisp.

My 2 Best Tips For How To Grill Asparagus

Oil & Seasonings: Toss asparagus with oil in a large bowl to ensure even coating. This prevents sticking and promotes even browning. Season generously with salt and pepper, as some will fall off during grilling.

Temperature Control: Start with medium-high heat to get good sear marks, then reduce to medium if needed. Too high heat will char the outside before the inside cooks through, while too low heat won’t develop those coveted grill marks.

With just four simple ingredients, this recipe lets the natural sweetness of asparagus shine through! The olive oil helps create a perfect sear while salt and pepper bring out the earthy flavors. This is one of my very favorite vegetables during grill season!

Grilled asparagus pairs beautifully with everything from grilled chicken and steak to fish and vegetarian mains. It’s elegant enough for dinner parties yet simple enough for casual family meals.

I totally suggest grabbing a couple bunches of asparagus the next time you’re firing up the grill!

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound asparagus
    • 1 tablespoon olive or avocado oil
    • salt and pepper
    • lemon wedges for serving optional

    Instructions

    • Prepare your asparagus by washing it, trimming the cut end, and tossing it with the oil of your choice.
    • Add a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper to the oily asparagus.
    • Preheat your grill over medium-high heat. Clean and oil the grates. (I do this with a cleaning brush, and then I dip a paper towel in oil and rub it on the grates; this helps everything to not stick.)
    • Reduce the heat to medium or medium-high, and place your asparagus on the grill so that it is crossing the grates. (Don't place the asparagus parallel to the grate or the spears will fall in!)
    • Allow the asparagus to cook 3-4 minutes and then roll or flip them over so that they can cook on the second side.
    • Cook an additional 3-4 minutes or until bright green and tender.
    • Remove from the heat and place on a serving platter.
    • Add additional salt and pepper to taste and squeeze of fresh lemon juice if you’d like.

    Notes

Fast Cooking: Asparagus cooks fast, generally under 10 minutes depending on big your asparagus spears are and how hot your grill is. If you are working with other grilled goods (meat) plan on 10 minutes or less for the cook time so that everything comes off the grill hot at the same time.
    Flavorings for Asparagus:
    • The lemon is optional but it’s pretty and adds a nice brightness to the dish.
    • Beyond salt and pepper, try garlic powder or herbs like thyme and rosemary.
    • Parmesan cheese is also a delicious addition to grilled asparagus.
    • After removing from the grill, the asparagus can be drizzled or tossed with balsamic glaze for another fabulous flavor.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I know when grilled asparagus is done?

Perfectly grilled asparagus should be bright green with slight char marks and tender when pierced with a fork. The spears should still have a slight bite to them and not be mushy. Total cooking time is typically 6-8 minutes.

Should I use thick or thin asparagus spears for grilling?

Medium to thick asparagus spears work best for grilling as they hold up better to the high heat and are less likely to overcook. Pencil-thin asparagus can become mushy quickly on the grill.

Can I prepare grilled asparagus ahead of time?

While grilled asparagus is best served immediately, you can grill it up to 2 hours ahead and serve at room temperature. Avoid reheating as it will become mushy and lose its appealing texture.
