🍰 My banana bread with chocolate chips and walnuts disappeared so fast at the office bake sale that my coworkers started a group chat begging me to bring another loaf tomorrow!

My 2 Best Tips For Making Banana Bread with Chocolate Chips and Walnuts

Banana Ripeness: Use bananas that are heavily spotted or even slightly black for maximum sweetness and flavor. The riper the bananas, the more natural sweetness and moisture they’ll add to your bread.

Toast Nuts: Lightly toast your nuts in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes before adding them to the batter. This enhances their flavor and adds extra crunch that won’t get soggy during baking.

Stir the batter just until the flour disappears to avoid tough, dense bread. A few lumps are perfectly fine and will result in a tender, fluffy texture.

Resist the urge to slice immediately after baking. Letting the bread cool completely allows the flavors to develop and prevents crumbling when you cut it.

This banana bread with chocolate chips and walnuts is perfect for everything from your morning coffee ritual to afternoon tea with friends. Whether you’re packing lunch boxes, hosting a brunch, or need a comforting dessert, it goes with pretty much any occasion!

    🩷 Melissa

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon baking soda
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • ½ cup sugar
    • ¼ cup butter (melted)
    • ½ cup sour cream
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 cup coarsely smashed (chunky very ripe banana, about 3 small)
    • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chunks (12 ounce package)
    • ½ cup sliced almonds toasted and cooled

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350º
    • In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside.
    • Combine sugar, melted butter, sour cream, eggs and vanilla in a large mixing bowl; beat until well blended. Stir in bananas. Add flour mixture to banana mixture, stirring just until moistened. Mix in chocolate chunks and nuts.
    • Spoon batter into an 8 ½ x 4 ½ x 3-inch loaf pan coated with baking spray with flour. Bake for 1 hour and 5 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
    • Cool 10 minutes in pan on a wire rack; remove from pan, and cool completely on a wire rack before cutting.

    Notes

Mix-In Options: Feel free to swap the almonds for walnuts, pecans, or even add dried cranberries alongside the chocolate chips for extra flavor variety..
Perfect Texture: Don’t overmix the batter once you add the flour – stir just until combined to ensure your bread stays tender and fluffy.
Size Variations: You can make 4 mini loaves (bake for 30 minutes) or 12 muffins (bake for 18 minutes) instead of one large loaf for portion control or gift-giving.
    Storage Tips:
    • Store covered at room temperature for up to 5 days.
    • Or freeze individual slices for up to 3 months for quick breakfast treats.

How To Make Banana Bread with Chocolate Chips and Walnuts

Collage showing banana bread with chocolate chips and walnuts: top left, ingredients including eggs, bananas, flour, and nuts; top right, sliced almonds in a bowl; bottom left, bread baking; bottom right, finished loaf with sliced pieces.

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F and coat an 8½ x 4½ x 3-inch loaf pan with baking spray. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt, then set this dry mixture aside.

Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, melted butter, sour cream, eggs, and vanilla, beating until well blended. Stir in the mashed bananas until everything is evenly incorporated.

Step 3: Add the flour mixture to the banana mixture, stirring just until the ingredients are moistened and barely combined. Gently fold in the chocolate chunks and toasted almonds, being careful not to overmix the batter.

Step 4: Spoon the batter into your prepared loaf pan and bake for 1 hour and 5 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove it and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use frozen bananas for this recipe?

Yes, frozen bananas work perfectly and are often even more mashed and sweet. Just make sure to drain any excess liquid before measuring.

How do I prevent chocolate chips from sinking?

Toss the chocolate chips in a tablespoon of flour before folding them into the batter. This coating helps them stay suspended throughout the bread instead of settling at the bottom.

Can I make this recipe into muffins instead?

Yes, divide the batter among 12 muffin cups and bake for 18 minutes at the same temperature. Check for doneness with a toothpick just like the loaf version.

Nom nom nom I could gobble these up in no time. I love banana bread. I don’t think adding chocolate to it would be a good idea for me though. Without the chocolate I can fool myself into thinking it’s healthy right? Cause it has fruit? hehe

Oh my gosh, those chunks of chocolate in there look absolutely amazing! I love chocolate chips in my banana bread (and as a banana ripeness snob, I go through quite a few batches of banana bread), though I have to admit, I play around with flavors when i’m churning, but when I am at the store and I’m picking out ice cream? It’s chocolate chocolate chocolate. Mmm…now I want ice cream 😀

I love Scharffenberger chocolate chunks and they go great in this recipe. Love the smaller loaves, too 🙂

Mmmm–looks so good. We love chocolate chips in our banana bread/muffins, in fact, the kids are mad at me when I don’t put them in and then won’t eat any. Love the chunks look.

Is it banana month and I just don’t realize it? Everyone is making banana something. I better hop on that. I’ve never had chunky monkey ice cream, but I think Cade has. Either way, looks lovely!
