🇺🇸 The red watermelon, white mozzarella, and dark blue blueberries are the perfect combo for a 4th of July appetizer. But of course, these fruit and cheese skewers are a perfect addition to any summer get together!

My 2 Best Tips For Making 4th of July Fruit Skewers

Plan Your Portions: This recipe typically yields about 23 skewers from one container of mozzarella balls. For parties, plan on 2-3 skewers per person as an appetizer, or 4-5 per person if serving as a light main course alongside other dishes.

Choose the Right Watermelon: Select a watermelon that sounds hollow when tapped and has a yellow ground spot where it sat on the vine. The fruit should feel heavy for its size and have a uniform shape without soft spots.

These skewers naturally showcase the red, white, and blue theme with vibrant watermelon, creamy white mozzarella, and deep blue blueberries. No artificial coloring needed – just beautiful, fresh ingredients that scream Independence Day (and summer)!

Both children and adults absolutely devour these skewers at parties. The combination of sweet fruit and mild cheese appeals to all taste buds, making them the perfect addition to any 4th of July gathering where you want to please every guest.

With just four main ingredients and simple skewering, you can have these ready in under 15 minutes. There’s no cooking required, making them ideal for hot summer days when you want to spend more time enjoying the celebration than in the kitchen.

    4th of July Fruit Skewers

Create stunning 4th of July Fruit Skewers with fresh watermelon, creamy mozzarella, and juicy blueberries. These patriotic red, white, and blue appetizers are perfect for Independence Day celebrations—quick to assemble and guaranteed to be crowd-pleasing!

    Equipment

    • Melon baller
    • Wooden skewers

    Ingredients

    • 1 8 ounce tub mozzarella balls (My container had 23 balls.)
    • 1 pint blueberries
    • 1 seedless Watermelon
    • mint leaves for garnish (optional)

    Instructions

    • Wash, drain, and dry blueberries.
    • Scoop out balls of watermelon and set aside in a colander or on a plate with paper towels to keep them from being too juicy.
    • Drain mozzarella balls.
    • Thread 2 blueberries, 1 mozzarella ball, and 1 watermelon ball onto each skewer.
    • Place on a serving dish and cover or place in a container with a lid. Keep cool until ready to serve.

    Notes

    Recipe Variations:
    • A balsamic glaze drizzled over would add to the wonderful flavor of these skewers.
    • Basil would also work with these.
    • Strawberries, raspberries, or red grapes work wonderfully for the red element.
    • White grapes or cubed pears can substitute for mozzarella if you prefer an all-fruit version.

Extra Watermelon: You will have a little leftover watermelon so I try to scoop from one end so that I can slice the other end, or you could add more watermelon balls to the skewers.
Pretty Serving Ideas: Arrange the skewers upright in a tall glass or vase, or lay them on a platter lined with fresh mint or patriotic napkins. Provide small plates and napkins nearby for easy eating.

How To Make Fruit & Cheese Skewers

3 collage photos of making red, white and blue fruit and cheese skewers; one with watermelon using a melon baller, one with the watermelon, blueberries and mozzarella in bowls, and one put the fruit and cheese on skewers

Step 1: Cut the watermelon into quarters using a long serrated knife.

Step 2: Using a melon baller is the easiest way to create the cute little watermelon balls, but you can also use a 1 teaspoon measuring spoon to create the melon balls. Or just cut the watermelon into small squares!

Step 3: Thread the fruit and cheese onto the skewers. I used 2 blueberries, one cheese ball, and one watermelon ball for each 6″ skewer.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I make these 4th of July fruit skewers ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble these skewers up to 4 hours before serving. Store them covered in the refrigerator to keep the ingredients fresh. Add mint garnish just before serving for the best appearance.

What can I substitute for mozzarella balls if I can’t find them?

You can use cubed fresh mozzarella, small cubes of white cheddar, or even feta cheese. For a non-dairy option, try cubed white melon like honeydew or jicama for a similar color and crunch.

How do I get perfect watermelon balls?

Use a melon baller or small ice cream scoop to create uniform spheres. Choose a ripe but firm watermelon for the best results. If you don’t have a melon baller, cut the watermelon into small cubes instead.
