These cheesy breadsticks are everything you love about pizzeria breadsticks, but even better because they’re made fresh in your own kitchen. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity – a few basic ingredients transform into an absolutely mouthwatering appetizer or side dish. Whether you’re serving them alongside your favorite pasta dish or enjoying them as a snack with marinara sauce for dipping, these breadsticks never disappoint!

One thing we absolutely love about this recipe is its versatility. While we’ve used a classic Italian herb blend, you can easily customize the seasonings to match your meal or mood. Add some heat with crushed red pepper flakes, go heavy on the garlic for an extra punch, or keep it simple with just salt and pepper – the possibilities are endless!

Why You’ll Love This Bosco Sticks Recipe

    • Easiest Breadsticks Ever: Create restaurant-quality breadsticks right at home in just a few minutes. Perfect for movie night, sleepovers, or just fun afternoon snacks!
    • Basic Supplies: Uses simple pantry staples you likely already have. (If you don’t have cheese sticks, use slices from a block of cheese instead.)
    • Prep Ahead: Can be prepared ahead and baked when needed.
    • Go-To Side Dish: Makes the perfect side dish for any Italian meal.

    Recipe Ingredients

    • Pizza dough — store-bought or homemade
    • Mozzarella cheese — sticks or blocks to cut into sticks
    • Butter
    • Italian seasonings — A blend of oregano, basil, thyme, and parsley brings authentic Italian flavor.
    • Marinara sauce — for serving

See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

Ingredients for a recipe are arranged on a marble surface: a roll of pizza dough, a bowl of butter, marinara sauce in a bowl, Italian seasoning in a small dish, and a plate of mozzarella cheese sticks.

    How to Make Cheesy Breadsticks

A baking tray on a marble countertop with cheese sticks partially wrapped in strips of dough. Nearby are small bowls containing butter, herbs, and marinara sauce.
A baking tray with seven uncooked breadsticks lined with a creamy topping and herbs. A red pastry brush and sauce bowl are in the top right corner on a marble surface.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Roll out the pizza dough in a rectangle about ¼-inch thick. Cut into 2-inch strips.

Step 2: Place a stick of mozzarella cheese on each piece of dough. Wrap dough around the cheese and press to seal.

A baking tray with four baked breadsticks evenly spaced. The breadsticks are golden brown and sprinkled with herbs, placed on a marble countertop. A small white bowl with tomato sauce is partially visible in the top left corner.
Breadsticks seasoned with herbs surround a bowl of marinara sauce on a marble surface. One breadstick is dipped into the sauce. A striped cloth and a small wooden spoon with dried herbs are nearby.

Step 3: Bake 4 breadsticks at a time on a baking sheet for 12 minutes.

Step 4: Combine melted butter and Italian seasonings. Brush the butter mixture on the Bosco sticks. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the breadsticks up to the baking step and refrigerate them for up to 24 hours. When ready to bake, let them come to room temperature for 30 minutes before putting them in the oven.

What’s the best cheese to use?

While mozzarella is traditional, you can experiment with different cheese combinations. Try cheddar for sharp flavor, provolone for extra stretch, or pepper jack for a spicy kick. Just make sure to use cheese that melts well.

What can I serve with these breadsticks?

These versatile breadsticks pair perfectly with: Marinara sauce, garlic butter sauce, ranch dressing, alfredo sauce, pizza sauce, pesto, or warm cheese sauce.

    Expert Tips

    • Room Temp: Let the dough come to room temperature before working with it – this makes it much easier to handle and stretch.
    • Butter Topping: Don’t skip the butter brush after baking. It’s the glue that holds the Italian seasonings in place and really makes the breadsticks super yum!
    • Make Room: Space the breadsticks at least 2 inches apart on the baking sheet to allow for expansion.
    • Extra Cheese: For extra cheesy breadsticks, sprinkle shredded Parmesan cheese on top during the last 2 minutes of baking.

    How to Store Leftover Breadsticks

Store any leftover breadsticks in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

To reheat, warm them in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes until heated through, or microwave for 20-30 seconds. For best results, brush with a little extra butter after reheating.

    Ingredients

    • 2 store bought pizza doughs or homemade pizza dough
    • 8 mozzarella sticks
    • 2 tablespoons salted butter
    • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
    • ½ cup marinara sauce

    Instructions

    • Preheat the oven to 425°F.
    • Roll out your sheets of pizza dough. Cut each sheet of dough into sheets about 2 inches thick and wrap your mozzarella sticks so they are completely covered by dough.
    • Bake 4 bosco sticks at a time on a baking sheet for 12 minutes.
    • Melt the butter in the microwave and then whisk your butter together with the Italian seasoning. Brush the butter on your bosco sticks.
    • Serve and enjoy!

    Notes

    • If the tops are browning too quickly, tent with foil during baking.
    • My family likes garlic, so I like to sprinkle a bit of garlic salt on top of the breadsticks after baking or mix into the melted butter along with the Italian seasonings.
    • Cheese sticks can be substituted with strips of cheese cut off of a block. Just make sure the dough wraps completely around the cheese.
    • Give the breadsticks plenty of room on the baking sheet so they can expand — placing them 2 inches apart should be good.

I made them for my daughter and they’re tasty! I did add 2 1/2 tsp of sugar to the dough. Any tips on keeping them from busting in the oven and having the cheese spill out? Should I cook them at a lower temp for longer?

I’d probably actually let the dough rise a little long both times, I think the sugar activated the yeast a little differently and it rose more in the oven!
