Moist, tender banana muffins loaded with chocolate, almonds and crowned with a sweet streusel topping. Perfect for breakfast, a mid-day snack, or dessert.
My family loves banana muffins and whenever we have brown bananas sitting on the counter we look forward to my husband making banana muffins. Since he was out of town, I decided to take the opportunity to make a muffin version of the Chunky Monkey Banana Bread I posted a couple of years ago. I added a streusel topping to dress them up a bit.
These are big muffins. The batter is thick, so don’t be afraid to fill the muffin cups more full than you normally would – they rise up beautifully. Or if you prefer smaller muffins, you could divide the batter between more muffin cups.
These muffins were a big hit with my family and a fun way to change up banana muffins. I don’t often eat chocolate for breakfast, but a little bit now and then couldn’t hurt – right?
What do you like to make with your brown bananas?
I’ve updated this post with a short fun video to let you see how easy these Chunky Monkey Banana Muffins are to make!

Chunky Monkey Banana Muffins
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup butter melted
- ½ cup sour cream I used low fat
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup coarsely smashed chunky very ripe banana (2 large)
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup sliced almonds toasted and cooled
Streusel Topping
- ¼ cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ tablespoons butter melted
- 2 tablespoons sliced almonds slightly crushed
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly grease a muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray or vegetable oil, or line with paper muffin liners.
- Prepare streusel topping and set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; set aside.
- Combine sugar, melted butter, sour cream, eggs and vanilla in a large mixing bowl; beat until well blended. Stir in bananas. Add flour mixture to banana mixture, stirring just until moistened. Mix in chocolate chips and nuts.
- In a small bowl, whisk together sugar and flour. Add butter and mix until mixture has a sandy texture. Mix in almonds.
- Divide batter evenly into 12 muffin cups. Sprinkle muffins with streusel topping.
- Bake at for 20 to 25 minutes, until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool muffins for five minutes in the muffin pan before removing to a wire rack to cool.

I made this recipe yesterday, this is one of the best banana bread recipe I’ve ever made ! Although, I baked it as loaves instead of muffins, due to time restraints. Baking time was one hour tho . Which I already knew from making other loaves before ! FAMILY ate the whole loaf after dinner ! Will definitely be making this instead of my recipes !

Thanks Debbie! Nice to know it works well as a loaf too. Glad it was a big hit.

Mum you’ve got great timing! I just put two super ripe bananas in the fridge. I think they’d be tastier in these than in a smoothie! 😀

Oooooh, love banana muffins! We have a few bunches of bananas on our plants at the moment and they all ripen at once. We share a lot of the bananas with family and friends but sometimes I’m caught out with brown bananas. (also our heat makes them ripen very quickly). I love making banana muffins, too. It’s a funny coincidence that the last muffins I created also had a streusel topping. I love your video. Do you have any tips for making videos?

Is this recipe already adapted for high altitude? I just moved from sea level to 5900 ft and am just learning to bake all over again!
Barbara Schieving
Hi Amy – I’m sure at 5900 feet you need to make lots of changes. I haven’t found the need to adapt most dense moist recipes like these muffins at my altitude about 4,000 feet. You may have to at yours. Here’s a link to a guide I like to use http://cityhomecountryhome.blogspot.com/2010/08/high-altitude-baking-and-candy-making.html.

Drooling over these muffins 🙂 I just love banana muffins!

*sigh* yes indeed. Nothing better than banana cake and chocolate. And streusel. My men love my chocolate chip banana bread but these muffins will be made next time.

I love banana muffins and your recipe looks great! Love the almonds and chocolate chips in them, and the streusel topping makes them over the top!

I usually make Martha Stewart’s banana bread – I love it! But, I think I’m going to give these a whirl next time.

Muffins make any morning merrier! I love the sour cream in the batter–these must be so mega moist! Also, that streusel topping should be its own food group.

I love making big muffins…..and those look delicious. With all those goodies in them, what’s not to love? I’m going to have to instruct Bob to leave 2 bananas to turn brown on the counter, not just one like he usually does. Sheesh.
Thanks Barbara! 🙂
