🍿 This recipe takes just 5 minutes from start to finish, making it perfect for when you need a sweet treat right away!

My 2 Best Tips For Making Caramel Corn in the Microwave

Baking Soda Magic: Add the baking soda immediately after removing the hot caramel to create maximum foaming and lightness. This chemical reaction is what transforms dense caramel into the airy, crispy coating that makes homemade superior to store-bought. Work quickly as the mixture begins setting as it cools.

Bag Technique: Use a sturdy brown paper grocery bag rather than thin lunch bags to prevent tearing during the shaking process. Fold the top down at least twice to create a secure seal that won’t open during microwaving. The bag size should allow plenty of room for the popcorn to move freely.

The paper bag shaking method ensures every single kernel gets evenly coated with caramel. You won’t find any sad, plain pieces hiding at the bottom like you sometimes get with store-bought versions. Each bite delivers that perfect sweet crunch you’re craving.

Caramel corn is perfect for movie nights, parties, or whenever you need a quick sweet snack. Really it works for any occasion, and I find myself making it at least twice a month because it disappears so fast.

You can enjoy it straight from the bowl while it’s still warm, or save some for later snacking! I love munching on it during afternoon coffee breaks or packing it in bags for road trip treats.

Easy Caramel Corn in the Microwave

Making Caramel Corn in the Microwave is a total game-changer that delivers that perfect sweet, buttery crunch in just minutes. This simple method skips all the stovetop hassle while giving you bakery-quality results every time!

    Ingredients

    • ½ cup butter
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • ¼ cup light corn syrup
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
    • 2-3 quarts popped popcorn (It really just depends on how coated you want your popcorn!)

    Instructions

    • In a large, microwave-safe bowl, microwave butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt on high for 2½ to 3 minutes until bubbling. Remove from microwave and mix in baking soda.
    • Put popped popcorn in a paper grocery sack and pour caramel over popcorn. Fold down top of grocery sack and put in the microwave.
    • Note: Work in batches if you have a small microwave!
    • Microwave on high for 1 minute and 20 seconds. Take sack out of microwave and shake to evenly coat the popcorn. Pour out on cookie sheet to cool.

    Notes

Holiday Flavors: Add food coloring or seasonal spices like pumpkin pie spice to the caramel for themed variations.
Bowl Safety: Only use microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowls – never metal containers or anything with metallic trim.
Crispy Fix: If caramel corn turns out soft, bake at 200°F for 10-15 minutes to restore crunchiness.
    Storage Tips:
    • Store cooled caramel corn in an airtight container for up to one week at room temperature.
    • Freeze in sealed bags for up to three months.

How To Make Caramel Corn in the Microwave

A collage showing steps to make caramel corn in the microwave: popcorn in a bag, caramel mixture boiling and being whisked, caramel-coated popcorn on a tray, and an opened popcorn bag.

Step 1: Combine butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt in a large microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for 2½ to 3 minutes until bubbling, then stir in baking soda.
Step 2: Put popped popcorn in a brown paper grocery bag. Pour the hot caramel mixture over the popcorn and fold the bag top down securely.

Step 3: Place the sealed bag in the microwave for 1 minute and 20 seconds. Remove carefully and shake the bag vigorously to coat all the popcorn evenly.

Step 4: Pour the caramel corn onto a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Let it cool for a few minutes, then break apart any clusters and enjoy.

    Recipe FAQs

Why isn’t my caramel sticking to the popcorn properly?

This usually means the caramel mixture wasn’t heated long enough initially or the popcorn was stale. Ensure the caramel is bubbling vigorously and use fresh popcorn for best results.

What type of popcorn works best for caramel corn in the microwave?

Any plain popped popcorn works perfectly – air-popped, oil-popped, or unsalted microwave popcorn. Avoid pre-seasoned varieties as they can interfere with caramel adhesion and flavor.

Can I double this caramel corn in the microwave recipe?

Yes, but you’ll need a larger microwave-safe bowl and may need to increase the initial heating time by 30-60 seconds. Use a bigger paper bag to accommodate the extra volume and ensure even coating.
