See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Popular Substitutions and Variations

    • Use coconut sugar as a substitute for brown sugar to create a syrup with a subtle caramel-like flavor and a hint of coconut.
    • Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves to the syrup while it’s simmering for a warm, spiced flavor.
    • Add strips of lemon or orange zest to the pot as the syrup cooks to infuse it with a bright, citrusy flavor.
    • Swap brown sugar for white sugar if you prefer a lighter, more neutral flavor. This will create a simple syrup instead of the rich, molasses-like taste of brown sugar syrup.

How To Make Brown Sugar Syrup

Step #1. In a large pot, stir all of the ingredients together until the sugar is fully dissolved.

Step #2. Continue cooking the mixture until it begins to foam and bubble. Serve and enjoy!

    Recipe FAQs

How do I store brown sugar syrup?

Store your syrup in an airtight container, like a glass jar or bottle, in the refrigerator. It should keep well for about 2-4 weeks.

    Why did my syrup crystallize?

Crystallization can occur if there’s too much sugar in the mixture or if it wasn’t stirred enough while cooking. To fix it, gently reheat the syrup with a little water until the crystals dissolve.

Can I make the syrup thicker or thinner?

Yes! To make it thicker, simmer the syrup longer to reduce it. For a thinner consistency, add a bit more water during cooking.

    Expert Tips

    • Cook the syrup over medium heat to ensure even cooking without burning. Stir frequently to dissolve the sugar completely and prevent sticking.
    • If adding vanilla, spices, or citrus zest, do so near the end of cooking or after removing from heat to preserve their full flavor.
    • Serve the syrup warm for the best texture and flavor. Reheat it gently on the stove or in the microwave before using.
