🥪 This recipe works wonderfully with different bread types, cheeses, and even meat combinations based on your preferences!

My 2 Best Tips For Making This Easy Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe

Egg Mixture: Don’t skip the milk in your egg mixture as it creates a lighter, fluffier coating that won’t become soggy. I like to whisk the eggs thoroughly to get rid of any streaks because they can create uneven browning. The consistency should be smooth and well-blended for the best results.

Cheese Placement: Layer your cheese both under and over the meat to create a protective barrier that keeps everything together during cooking. This technique also ensures every bite has that perfect cheese pull we all love. The double cheese layer prevents the meat from sliding out when you take a bite.

The combination of savory ham and turkey with creamy melted cheese creates an incredible flavor profile that my entire family enjoys! The egg batter coating adds a subtle sweetness that complements the salty meat.

What I like about this recipe is that it works well with different bread types, cheeses, and even meat combinations based on your preferences. You can easily customize it for dietary restrictions or use whatever you have in your refrigerator.

Build your sandwich with the mayonnaise-mustard mixture spread evenly to the edges of each bread slice to prevent soggy spots. Press gently after assembly to help everything adhere before dipping in the egg mixture. This extra step makes flipping much easier and prevents filling from escaping.

    Ingredients

    • 4 slices of bread (I usually use a homemade white sandwich bread or brioche bread.)
    • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
    • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
    • 6 slices of sliced Provolone cheese (Swiss and Gruyere are also good.)
    • 4 slices of deli ham
    • 4 slices of deli turkey
    • 2 eggs
    • ½ cup milk
    • 1 tablespoon butter

    Instructions

    • In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard together. Spread the mixture evenly on each slice of bread.
    • Take one slice of bread and place a slice of Provolone cheese.
    • Add 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of turkey on top of the cheese.
    • Add 2 more slices of cheese.
    • Place a piece of bread, mayonnaise/mustard side down on the cheese. Set aside.
    • Repeat for the second sandwich.
    • Preheat a skillet on medium heat.
    • In a shallow bowl, whisk the eggs. Add in the milk and mix well.
    • Take one sandwich and quickly dip into the mixture on both sides. Repeat for the second sandwich.
    • Once the pan is heated, add the butter and melt completely.
    • Place the dipped sandwiches in the pan and cook on medium heat for 2 minutes on each side.
    • Flip and cook for an additional 2 minutes until nice and golden.
    • Serve immediately!

    Notes

Storage Tips: Leftover sandwiches can be refrigerated for up to 2 days and reheated in a toaster oven for best results. Avoid microwaving when reheating.
Meat Variations: Try using leftover holiday turkey, roasted chicken, or even ham steak for different flavor profiles. Avoid overly wet or heavily seasoned meats that might make the sandwich soggy.
Side dish: Serve with a raspberry jam for dipping or add it to the sandwich.
Presentation Ideas: Cut diagonally and secure with decorative toothpicks for an elegant presentation that’s perfect for entertaining.

How To Make Monte Cristo Sandwiches

A slice of bread spread with mayonnaise sits on a wooden cutting board next to slices of ham and a glass bowl of mayonnaise, ready to be layered for a classic monte cristo sandwich recipe.

Step 1. Mix mayonnaise and Dijon mustard in a small bowl. Spread the mixture on each bread slice.

Slices of provolone cheese stacked on top of ham on a wooden board, with a glass bowl of mayonnaise and a butter knife nearby—perfect ingredients for your next Monte Cristo sandwich recipe.

Step 2. Assemble sandwiches: cheese, ham, turkey, more cheese, and another bread slice (mayo side down) to create two sandwiches.

A sandwich with white bread sits in a shallow white bowl filled with beaten eggs, ready for dipping—just like in a classic monte cristo sandwich recipe. A wooden board with another sandwich is visible in the background.

Step 3. Whisk eggs and milk in a bowl. Dip sandwiches in the mixture.

Step 4. Melt butter in a skillet, cook sandwiches for 2 minutes on each side until golden, and serve immediately. Enjoy your Monte Cristo sandwiches!

    Recipe FAQs

Can I bake these instead of pan-frying?

Yes, you can bake them at 375°F for about 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through. However, pan-frying gives you better control over the browning and creates a crispier exterior. Baking works well when making multiple sandwiches at once.

How do I prevent the sandwich from falling apart while cooking?

Press the assembled sandwich gently before dipping, use toothpicks to secure if needed, and don’t oversoak in the egg mixture. Work confidently but carefully when flipping, using a wide spatula for support. Proper cheese placement also helps hold everything together.

What’s the best bread to use for monte cristo sandwiches?

White sandwich bread works perfectly, but brioche, challah, or thick-cut French bread create an even more luxurious version. Avoid thin breads that might fall apart during the dipping and cooking process. The bread should be sturdy enough to hold the filling and absorb the egg mixture.
